i see Earth, BUILDING AND GROUND

i see Earth, BUILDING AND GROUND was an exhibition of work by Tom dePaor, curated by Nathalie Weadick and presented at the VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art in Carlow, Ireland with the Irish Architecture Foundation from February 8th to May 26th, 2022.

Challenging traditional retrospectives, this exhibition offered a captivating mix of social, political, and historical commentary, spanning Tom dePaor’s diverse artistic practice from 1991 to 2021. Sculptures, objects, films, drawings, paintings, and writings came together, presenting thirty years of creativity as a new, immersive work.

At the core was an awe-inspiring 2km 3D 1:1 drawing, meticulously crafted from 6mm round bar steel, depicting a house, fence, bridge, hut, boat, and island with soaring birds. Inspired by The Willow Pattern, it invited contemplation of architectural culture. Accompanied by These Islands, a pair of films recorded by dePaor and Peter Maybury on Achill Island off coast of Co Mayo in 2013 and at Ballysadare Quarry, Co Sligo in 2017.
‘While this show could have been the kind of architect-doing-art installation that usually carries a large health warning, here it works beautifully. Its a show that feels to seamlessly reflect, evoke and provide a record of dePaors practice.’ Review by Rob Wilson from the Architects Journal, London, 11 March 2022.
